Day 1: Tangier – Tetouan – Chaouen
Our tour through the north of Morocco starts in the city of Tangier. You will arrive there by plane or by ferry, and in either case our staff will be ready to pick you up at the airport or at the port of the city.
With no time to lose, our English-speaking driver will take you by private vehicle to Tetouan, the first stop on our route: this city, often called the White Dove because of the predominant color of its buildings, was the capital of the former Spanish Protectorate of Morocco. Therefore, it retains a strong Spanish influence in its streets, as you will notice immediately. In addition, its historic medina, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, will be a pleasant surprise, as it still retains much of its monumentality and popular atmosphere.
After visiting Tetouan freely, we will head to the next destination of this first day of circuit: Chaouen (or Chefchaouen). On this occasion, its nickname is also very eloquent: the blue city, since that is the characteristic color of its picturesque old town. It retains intact its charm and even its enigmatic and sacred character, because until relatively recently it was forbidden access to Western travelers.
None of that is the case today, as it has become a welcoming place, with handicraft stores, facades decorated with flowers and locals full of customs. Accompanied by a local and official guide, we will stroll through the intricate and secluded streets of its medina, also reaching sites with panoramic views. And at the end of the day, you will rest in a charming riad in the heart of the medina.
Day 2: Chaouen – Roman ruins of Volubilis – Meknes – Fez
After breakfast at the riad in Chaouen, our vehicle will head south: less than 200 km away, three places of maximum interest await us. The first is the archaeological site of Volubilis, an ancient Roman city of which spectacular remains are preserved. The columns of the temple of Jupiter Capitolinus or the mosaics of the most stately homes will make us understand the importance of this enclave, which is listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
Volubilis is located just 20 km from Meknes, so do not miss the opportunity to also visit this imperial city of striking beauty. Capital during the reign of Sultan Mulay Ismail in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, still retains monuments that attest to the importance it achieved in the past. Its Bab Mansur gate is a good example of this, as well as the mausoleum of the aforementioned sultan.
Once we have admired this interesting city, we will continue to the final destination of this day: Fez, another imperial city. Given the large size of its historic center, we will leave the guided tour for the next day. In the meantime, you will rest in a charming riad located in the medina.
Day 3: Fez
The entire third day of this tour of northern Morocco is dedicated to the visit of Fez. Before starting the tour, you will have breakfast at the riad and then you will meet our official guide who will show you all the secrets of this fascinating imperial city, declared World Heritage Site by Unesco.
Some of the monuments and places of interest that can be part of the itinerary are its medersas or Koranic schools, including the Bou Inania, religious temples such as the Karaouine Mosque or symbolic buildings such as the Nejjarine Fountain. You will also discover the unique atmosphere that reigns in the souks and in the neighborhoods organized by guilds, such as the famous tanners’ quarter.
The afternoon will be free for you to do whatever activities you prefer, such as visiting the interior of museums and monuments or shopping in the city’s prestigious handicraft stores. In the evening, accommodation will be in the same riad in the medina.
Day 4: Fez – Tangier
The fourth and last day of this tour of northern Morocco will begin with breakfast at the riad in the medina of Fez. And after that, we will head back to the city of Tangier. Depending on the time of departure of your plane or ferry, you will have the opportunity to visit this city, which exudes an interesting mix of tradition and modernity.
Our driver will take you to the port or the airport at the agreed time to take you back to your place of origin. And we will say goodbye with the intention of saying ‘see you next time’, that is to say, until another tour organized by our agency.
